UK Indoor Track Update
Date 13-Jul-2013
Revolution Series organisers seem to have taken on board requests for extending the season. Tickets go on sale from Friday 26-Jul-2013 for a five event season. The first three events are as
previously planned but then Revolution 44 has moved to Manchester 1-Feb-2014 and the additional Revolution 45 now becomes the first in the series to be held in London on 15-Mar-2014. This puts the timing of the event at a couple of weeks after the World Championships in Colombia - but does raise questions about slippage in the post-games site works schedules since the Revolution London round is billed as the first elite event post-Games.

Update: “The season finale in London will include an additional night of racing on Friday evening. The centre piece to the race programme will be a Madison featuring some of the world's best endurance pros. There will be plenty of other world class racing to make a season finale double bill a fitting opening for the London Velodrome (Lee Valley VeloPark).” link

Meanwhile the UCI have still not announced a venue for round 3 of the World Cup - possibly because the new Paris velodrome construction schedule seems to be running late. And any chance of restoring the previous 4 round World Cup programme format must have gone for 2013-14.

Update Nov-2013: The 3rd round of the UCI World Cup will be held at Guadalajara, Mexico - not the ideal choice since this puts all the UCI track events for the rest of the season in Latin America. It also puts a big hole in the credibility of the series - but the new team at the UCI cannot fix everything at once. And at least now there will be a third round. Next year World Cup really needs to get back to a minimum of four rounds covering locations in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. It has the potential to be a great series. Look at the Manchester round - a ticket sell-out and supported by extensive media coverage; including live prime-time TV.

Some extra info about the UCI’s major events for 2013-14 has emerged - but is still very limited. The U23 / Junior Euro championships are booked for the Sangalhos Velodrome, Anadia - the same venue as in 2012. Update: Manchester and Mexico announced for World Cup

Normally interest in the winter track season does not start to pick up until July or later - but this year Glasgow will be hosting the Junior Worlds from 7 to 11 August. And recent experience has shown that there could be plenty of public interest - so tickets are going on priority sale from 18 March with general sales starting one week later.

For the rest of the confirmed calendar the biggest news is that London will host the concluding round of the Revolution series next January. It’s not yet clear if this will be the first event on the London track since the Olympics - but it will certainly be a sell-out. Given the popularity of these events it’s a pity that the series could not be expanded to give more races per venue. But it’s hard to be critical of the team that has done so much to boost British track racing over the years.

Not much news on the international calendar as yet but the UCI seem to be planning to limit their World Cup series to just three rounds again. However it is confirmed that the European Championships will be at Apeldoorn, Netherlands 18-20 October 2013 and the Worlds at Cali, Colombia 26 February to 2 March 2014.

After that it’s the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow starting from 23 July to 3 August. But that’s in the 2014-15 season and will feature Scotland versus England, Wales and Northern Ireland instead of simply Team GB. And if Scotland votes for independence that could become the normal situation in future years.
