UCI Women 2009

UCI Women’s Elite Trade Teams for 2009IMP03378ws
Dateline: 9-Feb-2009
Vision 1 Racing is the sole British team to appear on the UCI list - as compared to seven Italian teams and four from Holland. However there are none for the USA, Australia, Canada or New Zealand so that’s OK I guess; even though Vision 1 will be based in Belgium. How the eight strong team get on now that they have Nicole Cooke onboard will be watched with interest. Certainly Stefan Wyman and his team deserve plenty of encouragement and support for all their efforts - not just with Vision 1 but also the previous incarnations of the team; Team FB, Global Racing and Swift Racing.

The plans for the Halfords-Bikehut / GB National team in 2009 are not yet available.

UCI Women’s Elite National Team Rankings 2009
Dateline: 9-Feb-2009
These top 5 nations are the ones to be invited to enter this year’s top elite events - 1 Germany, 2 Netherlands, 3 Italy, 4 USA and 5 Sweden
The rest of the top 20 in the UCI’s ranking (based on the results for 2008) are - 6 Great Britain, 7 Switzerland, 8 Australia, 9 Lithuania, 10 Russian Federation, 11 Austria, 12 France, 13 Canada, 14 Ukraine, 15 Denmark, 16 China, 17 Spain, 18 Belgium, 19 Venezuela and 20 Poland

UCI Women’s Elite Road Calendar for 2009
Dateline: 9-Feb-2009
No World Cup (CDM) events in Geelong, Victoria this year and only 7 ranked events up to the end of March - compared to 13 in 2008. But the rest of the calendar seems good considering the the economic conditions. However this list, provided by the UCI, is worldwide so the European section is not so extensive. It may be stating the obvious to say that again there will be no British events. Hardly ideal preparation for 2012 or much reward for the successes at world and olympic level in 2008.
[Update: the French tour - the Grande Boucle - plans to have up to 3 days in the UK
A bright spot is the addition of the Tour of Qatar currently being contested by some 85 riders in the sunshine of the Gulf. Giorgia Bronzini was the winner of the first stage yesterday - and so became the first ever female pro-elite victor in the Middle East.
In Europe the “Het Volk” becomes “Het Niewsblad” through the changes at the sponsoring newspaper (but how many will still call the Het Volk?). And for 2009 the riders could get an even tougher ride than usual - the race is two weeks earlier than last year. February on the back roads of Belgium can be very cold.
