Adelaide, Australia 12-13 April 2008
Dateline; 17-Apr-2008
With the Olympics getting ever closer the competition should be getting stronger. But the line-ups in Adelaide for the UCI BMX World Cup seemed lacking - not in local support - but in competitors. For the men’s event 81 posted a qualifying time - with Donny Robinson (USA) fastest. But with 30 or so of the field being Australians how representative was the field?
In the women’s competition Jana Horakova (CZE) was fastest - but just 18 posted a qualifying time and, of these, 5 were Aussies. In the end the victories went to David Herman (USA) and Sarah Walker (NZL)

However it is interesting to note that 1,500 entries are expected for the Australian Nationals at the same venue that start today. And note that the UCI World BMX Championships will also be at the Adelaide Showground in July 2009.

Laoshan, Beijing, 20-21 August 2007
This Olympic test event attracted some 100 competitors for the Men’s event and 42 for the Women’s. However these numbers include a significant number of competitors from China and Hong Kong - who had 10 men and 7 women entrants who did not start or failed to qualify.

The first day produced the following groups of top 12 riders -

Men
1 DAY Mike USA 36.534
2 BENNETT Kyle USA +0.176
3 CISAR Steven USA +0.354
4 GUTIERREZ Pablo FRA +0.505
5 GODET Damien FRA +0.543
6 GRAVES Jared AUS +0.641
7 van den WILDENBERG Rob NED +0.651
8 MOO CAILLE Moana FRA +0.674
9 de VECCHI Manuel ITA +0.689
10 TAMME Lukas CZE +0.710
11 de WILDE Robert NED +0.717
12 GRAY Jamie AUS +0.744

Women
1 CHAUSSON Anne-Caroline FRA 37.446
2 WALKER Sarah NZL +0.461
3 READE Shanaze GBR +0.465

7 HORAKOVA Jana CZE +1.672
8 KINTNER Jill USA +1.867
9 HLADIKOVA Aneta CZE +2.028
10 BAILEY Tanya AUS +2.075
11 GEVING Amanda USA +2.128
12 CALLISTO Nicole AUS +2.576

They went through the quarters and semis to a produce a final of 8 riders with the following results -

Men
1 ROBINSON Donny USA
2 de WILDE Robert NED
3 GRAVES Jared AUS
4 van der BIEZEN Raymon NED
5 GUTIERREZ Pablo FRA
6 SCHERPEN Martijn NED
7 van den WILDENBERG Rob NED

Women
1 READE Shanaze GBR
2 CHAUSSON Anne-Caroline FRA +1.120
3 le CORGUILLE Laetitia FRA +1.280
4 DIAZ Gabriela Maria ARG +1.406
5 KINTNER Jill USA +2.584
6 WALKER Sarah NZL +3.140
7 CALLISTO Nicole AUS +3.422
8 BAILEY Tanya AUS +3.779

So the only American in the final won over the four finalists for the Netherlands - and the UK’s only competitor won for the women.

If these results will impact the “betting” on the Olympic medalists is doubtful. A year will have passed by then and the field may be quite different. However it does show that the Netherlands and the USA have at least four male competitive riders each with France and Australia not far behind across the male and female prospects. In contrast Britain’s results seem, as so often is the case, to be dependent on one talented individual.
